How to Pray for Teens

Part 1 of the Prayer Guide can be found here. This is Part 2 of the How to Pray for Teens A-Z Prayer Guide. This guide is just a way to help you focus your prayers for your teen or a teen you know.

There is a battle raging for the hearts of our teens. It is a battle and we need to be “praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.” Ephesians 6:18a (ESV)

Let’s pray as individuals, as parents, as small groups.

M is for Mind – Actions follow thoughts. The battle for our actions begins in our minds. What are we thinking? Where do we allow our minds to wander? Pray for minds that are transformed and renewed. (Romans 12:2) Pray that our minds will be like Christ. (Philippians 2:5) Pray that they will learn to take every thought captive to obey Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5)

N is for Night – Night is the time for rest. Pray that they will be able to rest and sleep. Pray that their dreams will bring them closer to God. Pray that their thoughts would be pleasing to God. Pray for protection as they sleep. While the night is the time for rest, it is also a time when things are done while trying to hide in the night. Pray that the light will shine in their lives.

O is for Obedience – We never outgrow the need to obey. While parents might not be asking them to obey as much, there is always someone that we need to obey. Teens might be enjoying freedom but there is still a need to obey. Pray that first of all they will obey God and then those in authority over them.

P is for Purity – Pause and think about the messages that the world gives whether sexually or just in thinking. In a world that mocks purity, we need to pray that teens will remain pure. The temptations are all around but pray that they will not give in but stand firm.

Q is for Quiet Time – Pray that teens will have a passion for God. How would life be for the teens we know if they have a heart that longed to know God, to spend time in his Word. (Psalm 42:2) Pray teens will see that God’s dwelling is lovely and that they will long for that. (Psalm 84:1-2). Pray that they will grow in knowing God through quiet time.

R is for Recreation – Recreation is the things that we do for fun. Choices we make can draw us closer to God or can drive us away from God. Pray that the decisions about how they spend their time will be wise and draw them closer to God.

S is for School – Learning and education at this time this what will prepare them for future opportunities. Pray that they will make this a priority in their lives. Pray that they will understand how important this is for their future. Pray for specific areas of study and for the teachers they might have. Talk to your teens and just know what is coming up so you can be praying specifically for those areas.

T is for Truth – The lines of what is truth have been blurred. The world says truth is what you think so there can be multiple truths about the same thing. Truth needs to be based on God and who God is. We need to know the truth so we can life truth. Pray that teens will understand the truth and life the truth.

U is for Understanding – Teens need an understanding of God and an understanding of people around them. Think about how life would be for each one if they had an understanding of God and others. Pray that they will know God and they will have understanding. Understanding is closely related to wisdom and with that the fear of the Lord. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. Psalm 111:10 (ESV)

V is for Vocation – This is the time when decisions are being made regarding vocation. Pray that the decisions made will draw them closer to God. Decisions should not be based on how they can make the most money or be successful. How can they love God and use the talents they have been given. This is a time of making decisions. Yes, those can be changed but often it is difficult to change later.

W is for Wisdom – Wisdom impacts how we live life. Look at other requests on the list and think about how wisdom impacts them. The wise person is one that is diligent. Knowing how to use your time wisely in recreation. Wisdom is needed to know the truth. Pray that teens will have a heart filled with wisdom.

X is for Excellence – Excellence is seen in how a job is completed, how studying is done, or how they practice a skill. Excellence is part of their work ethic. Learning to do a good job to completion. Pray that they will learn excellence in all areas of life. Everything that God does is good and excellent. We should be striving to do the same.

Y is for Yielding to God – We like to do things our way. Yielding to God means learning to do things God’s ways. It means denying ourselves. It is not because God is a big bully who wants everything his way. God is good and holy and his way is perfect. When we know him and learn to trust him, yielding to him will be so much easier. Pray that as teens they will learn to yield to God.

Z is for Zeal – Zeal is where you put your energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of something. What is something that the teens you know are pursuing? Pray that teens will learn to pursue God with all their minds and hearts. Pray for zeal for God.

As you use this A-Z Prayer Guide, I trust that it will help guide your prayers. Prayer is a petition to God for him to work. Pray that he will work in the lives of the teens you know.
