What am I reading? October 2019
Do you know that the Japanese have a word for people that hoard books that they don’t read? The word is tsundoku. I am guilty of that. There are books on my shelf because they were recommended. I have books that I want to read and so I bought the book. One of my goals for this year was to read the books that I acquired in 2019 in 2019. I used the word, acquired because that includes the books that are given to me or are free Kindle downloads as well as the ones I purchase myself. So what am I reading in October to help the recovered tsundoku?
What am I reading?
Destiny by David Gibson – Learning to live by preparing to die. I loved the byline of this book. It was on my August stack and didn’t get read then but as it is book group book for November. It will get read this month. I am looking forward to reading this and book group discussion helps to get a bit more out of the book.
Whispers in the Pews by Chris Morris – Mental Illness is real. Will the church get real? – I wanted to know a bit more about mental illness and so when this was on the list of books to review, I decided it would be a good one to read. Look for a review on that book in the next week or two.
Broken Works Best by Catherine Campbell – When God Turns Your Pain into Gain – The title caught my attention. I wanted to learn more about God and how he uses pain in our lives for his gain. Each of us has pain and how do we use that pain.
Prayer by Timothy Keller – Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God – I found this in the charity shop and knew that you can’t go wrong with a Keller book. I am looking forward to reading this.
A Refuge for my Heart – by Eleonore van Haaften – Trusting God Even When Things Go Wrong – This was another book that I found at the charity shop. The title drew me to the book. Looking at the reviews I felt that this would be a good book to read.
The Bletchley Girls – by Tessa Dunlop – War, Secrecy, Love and Loss: The Women of Bletchley Park tell their story – I borrowed this from the library. I enjoy World War 2 books and thought this would be a good read based on the stories of women who worked there.
Think less Learn More by Dr. Srini Pillay – unlock the power of the unfocused mind – Recently, I have been intrigued by the brain. I found this at the library. This is totally an unknown book so may or may not read the whole book depending on the direction of the book. Any comments on this book?
Children of the Mill by David Hanson – True Stories from Quarry Bank – This is another book from the library. I borrowed this book because Quarry Bank is about an hour from our house and I would love to know a bit more about this. This is about the Industrial Revolution.
My Kindle is on the stack because I will probably read a few of the novels that I have on there.
Currently, I have a book buying moratorium. That is partly to force me to read the books I have and part to stop spending money. I still download free books. I have 12 physical books to read this year and 14 ebooks plus books for reviews. Don’t worry I won’t run out of books to read. I have books on my shelves from previous years. Maybe that will be next year’s goal.
So what are you reading this month? I love book recommendations. I have a list of books I want to read so feel free to add give me recommendations for that list.
Do you want more detailed reviews of any of these books? I am happy to share if you would like that.
Here is a link to my Summer 2019 Reading List – I have updated it with comments after reading the books.

What’s the word for taking too many books out of the library? That’s what I do! I think I can read way more than I do.
I enjoyed the Keller Prayer book.
