Learning to Pray in Prayer Triplets

We need prayer. We need to pray. Individually we need prayer. Our families need prayer. Our churches need prayer. The cities where we live need prayer. The schools in our neighborhood need prayer. Our nation needs prayer. We need prayer. We need to pray. Prayer Triplets is one way to consistently pray.

“Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Matthew 18:19-20 (ESV)

Two or three gathered together to pray. That is a prayer triplet.

What is a Prayer Triplet?

Simply a prayer triplet is three people gathering regularly to pray. These can be three people from church, school, work, your neighborhood. It is three people gathered to pray.

What is prayer? Simply, a conversation with God. So together, three of you are having a conversation with God listening and speaking.

If you find three friends, you can create a prayer square. I would limit it to 4. You want time to share and pray.

Background of Prayer Triplet

The idea of prayer triplet began prior to a mission of Billy Graham in the UK. Brian Mills was given the responsibility of helping the nation to pray prior to the mission. The Lord gave him the idea of praying in groups of three. Each individual praying for three people that they knew so the groups were praying for a total of nine individuals primarily to come to Christ. They were also praying for their own needs.

Praying together in threes. It sounds so simple but yet it is so powerful. The movement of prayer triplets began. In the 18 months before Billy Graham came, there were over 30,000 prayer triplets with thousands already coming to the Lord. That is the power of prayer.

Why Join a Prayer Triplet

Joining a prayer triplet is one way to be consistent in praying. As your group gathers together, you will be praying. It will encourage you to pray at other times.

Prayer is one of the weapons that we have in our armor of God. (Ephesians 6:18) Join a prayer triplet and fight together.

As you pray together, you will bear the burdens of one another. (Galatians 6:2) How encouraging it can be to know that others are praying with you and for you.

How to Form a Prayer Triplet

Prayer is so simple and yet so hard at times. Forming a prayer triplet will help you to be consistent and focused in your prayer.

Ask two friends to join you regularly in prayer. You might not know these people that well but you know that you can pray together. There needs to be a commitment from all. Make it a priority in your schedule.

Set a time and place for your regular time of prayer. I recommend weekly or bi-weekly.

An advantage of a prayer triplet is even if one person can’t make it, the group can still meet and pray.

Have a way of updating the group easily. I use WhatsApp for my prayer triplet. It is easy to just send an update.

How to sustain your Prayer Triplet

You want a prayer triplet that will continue to strengthen and encourage you. Here are some ideas to help you create a sustainable prayer triplet. These tips will help you create a prayer triplet that will go on for years to come. A friend was telling me that she has been in a prayer triplet for 30 years.

Have a time limit for how long you will meet. When the time that you have gathered for prayer begins to stretch on and on, sticking with the group can be hard. Set a timer, that could help the group. Set a time limit for your gathering.

Have an established time and place for your regular meeting. The fewer decisions you need to make, the easier. This will allow everyone to know when and where you are meeting. Don’t spend the last five minutes of your time together with calendars out trying to figure out when you will meet. Have it already established in the calendar.

Be ready to begin when your time begins. So if you are meeting in a coffee shop, get there early to order your drink and be ready to pray. If you are meeting in a home, bring your own drink so the hostess doesn’t need to take time fixing drinks.

Be ready to share your requests. Share praises from previous requests. Be honest with your struggles. Learn to pray for the deep issues not just the surface things in your life.

Keep things confidential. In order for the group to grow together, members need to know that what they say will remain in the group.

Don’t try to solve everyone’s prayer request then and there. So when someone asks prayer for a struggle, don’t share how you have handled that. I think you know what I mean. The person that requests prayer for a job and then everyone begins to chime in with all the places where that person could look. One member might even begin the story of how they were in the same situation and all the things that they did. It might be helpful but it is a time for praying. Share that later.

Pray for things outside of the requests of the members. This will guard you against becoming self-focused as a group.

Take the time to pray together. Record the requests but then together pray. It can be encouraging to hear someone pray for your specific request. Pray together.

Don’t confuse this with an accountability partner. A prayer triplet is just two other people that you pray with. There might be some accountability but it is not designed to be that.

Prayer Triplets Will be a Blessing

I opened WhatsApp and quickly typed the message, “pray for xxx”. I knew that my prayer triplet would be praying when they saw that message. They knew various bits of my life and could pray even without those details. My prayer triplet had formed with three friends. At this time we are not living in the same city and so we rely on WhatsApp to keep us connected.

Do you have a prayer triplet? If so, share with me how that group has blessed and encouraged you?

If you don’t have a prayer triplet, can you think of two people that you could share this post with and ask them to join you in forming a prayer triplet?

  1. I like this idea of prayer triplets. It’s different than an accountability partner but similar. I have a thankfulness triplets group, that has been a blessing for years. We text each other something we are thankful for. Used to be daily, but recently less frequent. I think I will go send something now 😁

  2. I love this idea! Prayer is so important and something I definitely need to be more diligent about. When there are more people, prayer is all the more powerful.

  3. I have never heard of prayer triplets but what a great idea. This is so good because it´s hard to get a prayer group going mostly because of schedules and such. But three people is doable. We are youth pastors in Honduras and I will talk to my leaders about this prayer strategy.
