I am going, to be honest. Remember at the beginning of the year I said that you could expect three things from me on this blog. So now I am going to be authentic. I signed up for this review because I had read a book by this author. I knew it was suspense but I didn’t really read the adoption part. I didn’t think about how hard it might be to read or write a review. I am actually finding reflecting and reviewing a bit harder than I thought it would be.

While adoption is a beautiful thing, there is a sad side to adoption. There is grief. Adoption is a result of living in a fallen world.

What happens when there are corrupt people in authority? What happens when judges and others are not upholding truth and justice but using their power for their own good. That was the 1930’s in Memphis. I think in this day and age it is hard to think of what life would be like then. Not just corrupt but also the Depression. That was the time and place where Cecile Dowd lived.

The book needs to be read through Cecile’s eyes. She is a widow, alone with no family, trying to care for a three-year-old daughter. Then her daughter is gone. A neighbor has a part to play in that. Now Cecile is trying in a corrupt environment to find her daughter. Where can she get help? What does she do? Will she continue when it is difficult?

To find someone in that time and place that slowly begins sees the truth and is willing to take the risk to help is amazing. Everyone needs someone like that. Cecile found him and not the person that you might think but to see the help he brings is wonderful.

So for us today be the person that will speak up for those in difficult situations and do what is right to help those who need help.

I cannot even imagine the fear she must have faced. The challenges and then even wondering if she should continue. This is a story set in a real situation. I think that made the story all the harder to read. To think of many families torn apart.

The author is a mom of adopted children and I think she does a wonderful job staying true to the events and time.

About the Author

Liz Tolsma is a popular speaker and an editor and the owner of the Write Direction Editing. An almost-native Wisconsinite, she resides in a quiet corner of the state with her husband and is the mother of three. Her son proudly serves as a U.S. Marine. They adopted all of their children internationally, and one has special needs. When she gets a few spare minutes, she enjoys reading, relaxing on the front porch, walking, working in her large perennial garden, and camping with her family.

The True Crime Behind the Story

Georgia Tann was a woman who ran an adoption agency in Memphis, Tennessee, from 1924 until 1950. It is estimated that, in that time, she kidnapped over five thousand children and sold them to the highest bidder. She even advertised the children in the newspaper, especially around the holidays.
