What I Read – September 2020

Books I read September 2020

Reading is what I do when I am tired and need to sit. I am in the middle of chemo and so that means I am tired and have lots of time to read. So don’t try to compare what I read to what you did or did not do in September. I wish I was not sitting as much but that is life at this time.

September’s Reading

I am not going to share every book I have read but just some books.

None Like Him by Jen Wilken – I have had this on my shelf for a few years. I needed this reminder at this time. Just reading and reflecting on who God is. It helped me to think through these specific characteristics.

Willing but Weak by Paul Williams – This is a short book on the need for self-control. It was an easy read but packed with truth.

Saving Truth by Abdu Murray – I read this book with a highlighter in my hand. There was so much truth packed into one book. It helped to understand so much of what I see happening in the world around.

Redefining Perfect by Amy E. Jacober – This is one of the disability books that has been on my shelves. I wanted to read it a bit as I work on my book. This book helped me to see some of the issues in understanding disability from God’s view.

Spurgeon’s Sorrow by Zack Eswine – In this short book the author shares bits of Spurgeon’s struggles with depression. I was familiar with that as earlier this year I read the book, Susie. That is the biography of his wife. This is an excellent book to just understand depression but also to realise you are not alone if you suffer from that.

For the Body: Recovering a Theology of Gender, Sexuality, and the Human Body by Timothy C. Tennent – I read this as an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) ebook. I highlighted so many parts. Our identity needs to be in Christ. It is not what we feel but how we were created. As I read, I would pause and read a bit to my husband. I want this book on my shelf. It helped me in so many ways. I want to read it as a physical book.

I read a few novels which I will review in more detail later.

Have you read any of these books? Let me know in the comments below.

Reading What I Have

In 2018 I tracked the books I acquired with the goal of reading all the books I acquired. I use the word acquired because that doesn’t just limit it to books I purchase. This can be books given as gifts or books people are getting rid of. Now almost the end of 2020. I have 4 books from 2018 that I have not read.

The goal continued in 2019. I ended the year with 14 books that I had not read. It isn’t quite fair that Christmas is just a week from the new year. That doesn’t give much time to read the six books I got for Christmas. Now at the end of September 2020, I have read three books from that list. I have some reading to do in the next three months.

Just keeping it real and honest.

How am I doing in 2020? I have acquired 22 books. Hey, do I have to count the two books that arrived on 30 September? I will include them in the year to date total so that is 24 books. I have read 11 books of what I purchased – that is 48 percent. The focus for the remainder of the year will be to read books I own.

Look for my update at the end of October. Check-in and see how many books I acquire and how many I have read.

How many books do you have that you have not read? Leave a number in the comments of how many unread books you have from this year.

  1. Oh, I just acquired several new books also! Just as I thought I was finishing a big stack so that I could order a few new ones (Uh-oh, right?) then I was given a couple more! But I want to shift my focus, and feel so thankful for the words that God sends my way! Thank you for the great reminder today!

  2. Thanks for sharing these. I’m going to add the one about Spurgeon to my wish list. I think it could be such an encouragement to us all, a reminder that even the most passionate believers struggled and suffered at times.

  3. I love your list, Beth. I read a lot of non-fiction too. And books on my own shelf? Sigh. I have a few unread as well. I always give first priority to library books, borrowed books, and books to review. Those crowd out the ones I actually bought to read just for myself! ha. Maybe I should make that my goal in 2021. I did it a few years ago and got caught up on my own books. It felt good.
